Egyptian Walking Onion Transplants
  • Egyptian Walking Onion Transplants

These perennial onions are a great addition to your garden.  No need to buy or plant seeds for green bunching onions as the greens from these perennials are one of the first plants to emerge in the spring providing a steady supply of green onion through to mid-summer.  Part way through summer, the onions will send up a stalk which grows several topsets.  These topsets are mini onion bulbs which can be used for culinary purposes or they can be used to propagate more onions!

Before topsets develop the bulbs can be pulled and cured to use for planting or for cooking.  They are slightly tangier and more pungent than shallots so a little goes a long way.

The plants are very disease resistant and will last for many years in the garden.  Fertility requirements are fairly low considering it is such a great producer.  Well draining soil with a good amount of organic matter is really all that is needed.  You can mulch with some compost in the fall and spring to boost fertility.  If growing in a permaculture context, pairing with a nitrogen fixer would be beneficial to boost fertility naturally.

We typically plant bulbils in the fall.  This allows time for the topset to establish roots before winter sets in and gives the plant a head start in the spring.  It is best not to harvest in the first growing season but by the second growing season you will never need to plant green onions again!
