Mullein
  • Mullein

This hardy biennial plant is easy to grow from seeds, which germinate quickly in the spring, and it requires minimal care once established.

In its first year, mullein forms a rosette of soft, velvety leaves that can be harvested throughout the growing season. These leaves are known for their soothing properties, especially in teas and tinctures for respiratory health.

In the second year, mullein shoots up a tall, majestic, yellow-flowered stalk that can reach up to two meters. These flowers bloom from early to late summer. They can be used fresh or dried for herbal remedies, due to their naturally occurring anti-inflammatory properties.

Mullein plants are remarkably resilient, thriving in poor, disturbed soils where other plants might struggle. They require little in terms of fertility and are quite drought-tolerant, though they prefer a sunny location with well-draining soil. This adaptability makes mullein an excellent choice for gardeners looking to cultivate medicinal plants with minimal fuss.

Furthermore, mullein is known for its ability to attract beneficial insects, such as bees and butterflies, enhancing the biodiversity of your garden.
